Ceremonial information

In November 2002, the Academy hired Oscar veteran television producer Gil Cates to oversee the eleventh broadcast. "With ten performances under his belt, no other live producer is even close to the depths of his experience," said AMPAS president Frank Pierson in a press release announcing the election. "Gil practically found the awards show as a genre of style, and we have the honor of giving him a very special occasion to celebrate his 75th anniversary." A few days later, actor and comedian Steve Martin were chosen to bring the upcoming broadcast. Cates explained the reason for bringing back the veteran comedian saying, "A clever host, smart, sharp, intelligent, fast-paced and always on top of the action goes on, Wait, I have forgotten something Oh yes, and too angry, funny." According to an article published in Los Angeles Times, Cates approached actor and veteran Oscar host Billy Crystal for emigration tasks. However, as time went by and Crystal was still hesitant about the job, Cates offered Martin a hosting role. In a statement, Martin stated that he was honored to be chosen to bring the television show, "I am very happy to host the Oscar again, because fear and nausea always make me lose weight." In addition, this is the first Oscar ceremony to be broadcast in high definition.

To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Academy Awards, 59 actors who have received competitive and honors appear to sit on stage together during a segment called the Oscar Family Album. Every former winner is recognized by broadcaster Neil Ross and Randy Thomas with the films he won. At the end of the new winning segment Adrien Brody scored, Chris Cooper, Nicole Kidman, and Catherine Zeta-Jones, along with Honorary Oscar priest Peter O'Toole, joined them.

Furthermore, the US-led invasion of Iraq affected the broadcasts and nearby events. Hours after news that the war had begun, some actors like Cate Blanchett, Jim Carrey, and Will Smith withdrew from their role as presenter who mentioned security issues and respect for military families. Despite requests from ABC broadcasters to delay the process by up to a week, AMPAS president Pierson and the Cates ceremony producer refused to delay the gala to a different date on the grounds of unavailability of the Kodak Theater during that time. Pierson also stated that moving the celebrations to different places would be too expensive for the Academy. However, they also announced that the celebration of the red carpet will be severely restricted. The whitening chairs located along Hollywood Boulevard will also be unloaded, and ticket holders for those chairs will receive a good rain check for next year's event. Periodically during commercial breaks, ABC News readers and journalist Peter Jennings provide brief news on events occurring abroad. Hayao Miyazaki, who won the Best Animated Feature for Spirited Away, boycotted in protest against the Iraq War, stating that she "did not want to visit a country that bombed Iraq".

Nominated movie box office performance

At the time of the nomination announcement on February 11, the combined gross of the five Best Film nominations at the US box office was $ 486 million, averaging $ 97.3 million per film. Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers is the highest earner among Best Film nominations with $ 321 million in domestic box office receipts. The film was followed by Gangs of New York ($ 70.1 million), Chicago ($ 64.5 million), The Hours ($ 21.8 million), and finally The Pianist ($ 9.1 million).

Of the top 50 top grossing films of the year, 47 nominations went into 14 films on the list. Only Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2nd), My Big Fat Greek Wedding (5th), Ice Age (9th), < i> Catch Me If You Can (11th), Lilo & amp; Stitch (13th), Road to Perdition (23), Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (35), Gang of New York >> (37th), and Chicago (41st) are nominated for Best Picture, Best Animated Feature, or one of the directing, acting, or screenplay awards. 50 other top-rated box office hites are Spider-Man , Star Wars: Episode II: Attack of the Clones (3), Minority Report (16), 8 Mile (22), and Time Machine (44).

Bowling for Columbine acceptance speech

Shortly after winning the Oscar for Best Documentary Features, Bowling for Columbine Director Michael Moore speaks against US President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. He further criticized the president who stated, "We live in time with fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time when we have a man who sent us to war for fictitious reasons." The speech was received with a mixture of ridicule, applause, and rousing applause from the audience in the theater. Moments after the speech was closed, to lighten the mood, Mr. Martin joked, "The Teamsters help Michael Moore into his limo baggage."

Critical response

The event received a positive reception from most of the media publications. Television critic Robert Bianco from USA Today hailed Martin's hosting performance that wrote, "Lucky for viewers, Martin has two other qualities that are important for a good Academy Awards host: intelligence and insider status. for his benefit and us, winning the trust of the crowds and then cheerfully mocking them all night. "He also noted that the political statements of presenters and speeches" touch the tension for what is often a dull night. " Pittsburgh Post-Gazette TV columnist Rob Owen rattled that "Martin radiates class and intelligence, something that is often lacking in host awards, from jokes about small-scale alleged ceremonies to react to his return to the Oscar stage, Martin consoling consistently. "He also insinuated that even segments that respected Oscar's history" seemed tighter and less boring. " Tom Shales from The Washington Post commented highly on Martin's comment, "Helping immeasurably to make it a great show is Steve Martin, who serves as the host for the second time and wins as a cynical voice greeted happily at all ordinary piety and flattery. "He also commented that despite the tense atmosphere, speeches and tributes provide some heart-wrenching moments and desperately needed memories in an uncertain time.

Some media are more critical of the show. Television critic Ken Tucker of Entertainment Weekly bemoaned, "A great and intelligent Oscar actor two years ago, Martin tonight looked as if he had thrown a towel backstage and let a comedy writer Bruce Vilanch came with a gormless set instead of Hollywood-silly lines to free him of responsibility to be funny. "

The Chicago Tribune columnist Steve Johnson lamented," Martin in the second turn hosted Hollywood's big night , especially at the beginning of the go, a bit of off-key, his attempt to keep his face cheerful on things he understood but ultimately came across a touch of disrespect. "He went on to say," Except for the Moore line, he simply can not do possible tasks it's impossible, it makes people feel comfortable attending, or watching, a party when the war rages, visible to anyone who flips to CNN. "David Zurawik from The Baltim Sun's ore insinuated, "When the whole world watches pictures of captives and corpses broadcast on television identified as American soldiers, we watch host Steve Martin and a celebrity-themed theater celebrating their own interests. Try because they may have been overnight in the capital Fantasy Land to create a program that will transport us beyond current events, they never come closer. "He also complained that many of the comments and jokes that night seemed tone deaf and disrespectful because of the war.

Rating and acceptance

American broadcasting on ABC attracts an average of 33.04 million people over its length, which represents a 21% drop from the previous year's ceremony. It is estimated that a total of 62.55 million viewers watched all or part of the award. The event also earned a lower Nielsen rating compared to the previous ceremony with 20.58% of households watching more than 40.34 share. In addition, it collects a demo rating of 18-49 with a rating of 12.55 over 35.37 share among audiences in that demographic. Many media have observed that cable news coverage of the Iraq war distracts viewers from the ceremony and therefore contributes to a lower ranking. To date, he has earned the lowest impressions for Academy Award impressions since compiled numbers began with the 46th ceremony in 1974 and the lowest rank for any broadcast since Nielsen Media Research continues to track the data since the 33rd ceremony in 1961.

In July 2003, the ceremonial presentation received eight nominations at the 55th PrimeTime Emmy. Two months later, the ceremony won three of the nominations for the Art Direction Position For Various Programs Or Music (Roy Christopher), Extraordinary Lighting Direction (Electronic, Multi-camera) for Variety, Music or Comedy Programs (Robert Barnhart, Robert A Dickinson, Andy O'Reilly), and Outstanding Music Direction (Bill Conti).
