Plot summary

The book begins with the sisters of Wallace, the twelve-year-old Mary and the ten-year-old Jean, traveling alone on board to meet their father in Australia. Girls often take care of small children: at home, they enjoy "borrowing" the babies of their neighbors.

Their ship was disabled in a storm, and the two girls were floating around in a lifeboat with four babies, fellow passengers. The plane eventually drifted into tropical islands, and in scenarios such as Robinson Crusoe, they must learn to build shelter and survive in wild food. They did this with great success, while raising the baby through various developmental milestones and adopting the baby monkey they raised with their baby.

Throughout the story, the girls sang "Scots Wha Hae" to inspire their courage to deal with their situation.

At the end of the book, the girls also find characters like Friday: a mysterious rough man who lives alone on the island and dislikes children. He is finally warm to their baby, and they enjoy his company and his useful skills.

Eventually, the girls were rescued on Christmas Day, after the storm, and all the babies were returned to their parents. They spent Friday.
