Joan is married to Dr. Roland Burton (Sterling K. Brown), which makes Roland a single "Army Husband" among the main characters. Upon return from placement in Season 1, Joan struggled with PTSD resulting from her experience when deployed. She confessed to Joan when she returned from abroad, leading the discussion about the divorce. But the two men reconciled after he announced that he was pregnant and an explosion at Hump Bar.

Sara Elizabeth's baptist godfather is Claudia Joy and General Michael Holden. He and Roland adopted David in Season 5 and his adoption was completed at the 6th season premiere.

At the end of season 2, "Last Minute Changes," General Holden has received the transfer. His successor, General Rutledge, was an old friend with Connor. He told Joan that Connor would replace him as deputy garrison commander and he would be deployed to Iraq. In the first episode of Season 3, she was told that she would go with her new unit in three months.
While waiting for the placement, Joan continues to get involved with Connor. General Holden received promotion and was transferred back to the post as division commander. General Rutledge was transferred to the Pentagon while Connor remained in the post. After settling back, Holden asks Joan to take his assistant position. However, he refused, having made the decision that his place served as brigade commander in Iraq. He sees himself as a combat officer. Holden was surprised by his decision but also admired him.
In the episode "Post and Prejudice" Connor pitted against Joan in an annual war game and was well defeated even though he used one of his staff to leak information to his side. At the end of the episode Connor was transferred to a job at the logistics desk at the Pentagon at General Holden's request.

This is not a battlefield command, but it is an important task that is important and will be good for his career. Upon arrival he found the project behind schedule and over budget and employed diplomacy and organizational skills to work with local contractors and get it all back on track. There were some complications, but eventually he hired a new contractor and completed the project successfully. When the division was withdrawn, he returned to Fort Marshall to await the next combat troop deployment.
Upon returning to Fort Marshall in Season 4, Roland sees a minor deviation in his function, such as putting his clothes in the wrong cupboard and losing his balance. Eventually he was diagnosed with Traumatic Brain Injury possibly from an earlier RPG attack. He was placed on a healing leave and did not divide the division.
In the premiere of Season 5 he was informed of his promotion to the rank of colonel and also received an additional task of the garrison commander.
