Team History
In February 1967, two students of Claremont College set out to climb 10,154 feet tall Picacho del Diablo, the highest mountain in Baja California. They did not go back to school and were reported missing. After a weeklong search by the Los Angeles mountain rescue team, the couple were found very weak, almost dead, and saved from the valley over the mountain. Individuals participating in the rescue Picacho del Diablo were inspired to find the San Diego Mountain Rescue Team, and it was included as 501 (c) (3) in 1968.
