Plot

Sarah Benson (Kristen Wiig) is a successful organic food seller. Her husband Robert (Will Ferrell) is the best-selling author and financial expert. They are also parents of a one-year-old girl named Sully, and Sarah is pregnant with their second child.

During a meeting with friends for Sully's first birthday, Sarah gets a boost for Robert to take him aboard a boat in the lake behind their house, Storm Lake fictitious. Despite Robert's repeated warnings for Sarah to come out of an unsafe dock, he leaned on his fence, causing him to escape. He hit his head on the boat as it fell into the water. Robert dives, pulls him to safety and manages to wake him up. The trauma resulting from the experience caused Sarah to lose her baby. As a result, they can no longer have children.

Five years later, Robert has been a recluse, but has been conscious for six months after an alcoholic start after the loss of his son. She also became too protective of their six-year-old diabetic girl, Sully. Robert and Sarah plan to adopt an unwanted child, but are dissatisfied with the biological mother they encounter. They finally decided to house and care for an attractive young woman named Bridgette Gibson (Jessica Lowndes) during the final months of her pregnancy. Robert is currently writing his new book, but is struggling to get inspired.

After Bridgette told the Benson family that she lived in a homeless shelter, Robert and Sarah decided to offer the bedroom they woke up to the house for their lost child. Bridgette accepted the offer. After being left alone in his room, he pulled out a magazine with Bensons on the front cover and ripped half the one containing Sarah.

Sully finds through Bridgette's cracked bathroom door while she is bathing that her enlarged belly is fake. Bridgette explained to Sully that because of her small, slender body, she was worried that Bensons would not believe she was pregnant. Influenced young people accept this, and agree to keep this a secret from their parents. Another secret was when Bridgette removed the exercise wheel from Sully's bike (without Robert's knowledge or approval) and pushed her into the driveway where she was almost hit by a car. He distance himself from the vehicle and onto the street Dwayne Tisdale, hoodlum girlfriend tattooed Bridgette. Sully did not get hurt and Bridgette persuaded her to keep this a secret too.

One day, Robert opens the door to Bridgette's room and finds a copy of one of his books in between his belongings. She opened the front cover and recognized the signature as hers... to "Joni". Robert then realizes that Bridgette is really Joni, a fan with whom he slept while on tour of his last book and in the depths of his alcohol. After Sully disappeared, Robert and Sarah were questioned by the police, who produced the original Bridgette photo and confirmed his identity.

Bridgette and Dwayne took Sully back to their cabin across the lake, where Dwayne was led to believe that Bridgette was with her in a plan to blackmail Robert to get Sully back. But Bridgette has its own agenda: kill Sarah and have Robert and Sully for herself. Charlie, an employee of Sarah who had suspicions about Bridgette, followed him and Dwayne returned to the cabin. He was found and shot dead by Dwayne.

After Sully begins to feel sick for not having insulin, Bridgette speeds up his plan and confronts Robert and Sarah. The fight broke and Bridgette shot Robert at the shoulders moments after he defeated Sarah. Bridgette then puts Sarah in the driver's seat of her car in the garage, making her look like a suicide attempt. Robert regains his consciousness, finds Sarah and quickly moves him into the fresh air. He then went in search of Bridgette.

Bridgette drove a Dwayne truck with Sully beside her, as she went to Robert standing in the middle of the bridge. He did not stop, and Robert dived out of the way just in time, but Bridgette stopped the vehicle and aimed his gun at him. Sully jumps out of the truck and runs toward him. Hold them at gunpoint, order Bridgette Sully to get back to him or she will kill Robert. His father whispered something in Sully's ear before he turned to return to Bridgette. On his way, Sully darted to the bridge railing and plunged from the bridge. Disturbed, Bridgette diverts his gaze, letting Robert dive off the bridge after his daughter, when Bridgette fires his gun at them.

Bridgette turned to the railing when Robert and Sully climbed into a small boat with outboard motors, which Robert began to panic. He shouts after he does not make him shoot him again, but when he prepares to pull the trigger, another shot rings. Bridgette was struck under her right shoulder. The shot came from another pistol left by Bridgette at Benson's house... now held by Sarah, after regaining consciousness and following her family to their prospective murder scene.

Six months later, the Benson family was restored and intact. Robert and Sarah danced in the kitchen with their daughter.
