The Clemson Tigers are the athletic teams that represent Clemson University. They compete as members of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I level (sub-level Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) for football), mainly competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) for all sports since the 1953-54 season. Clemson competes and has won many NCAA Division I national championships in various sports, including soccer, men's soccer, and men's golf.

In 1896, football coach Walter Riggs came to Clemson, then Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina, from Auburn University. He always admired the Princeton Tigers, and therefore gave Clemson Tiger mascot. Clemson Tigers consists of seventeen athletic teams. Men's sports are football, basketball, baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and field (indoor and outdoor) and cross country. Women's sports are basketball, soccer, tennis, golf, volleyball, track and field (indoor and outdoor), cross country and rowing. The South Carolina Gamecocks is an athletic rival in the state of Clemson. Both institutions compete with each other in many sports, but the annual football game gets the most attention. Clemson's main rivals in the Atlantic Coast Conference are Georgia Tech and Florida State.

The Tiger Paw logo was introduced at a press conference on July 21, 1970. It was created by John Antonio and developed by Helen Weaver of Henderson Advertising in Greenville, South Carolina, from a Bengal tiger print sent to the agency by the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. The hook marks at the bottom of the claw are a sign that this is a licensed trademark for the university.

Team

Clemson University sponsors a team in nine NCAA sports that consists of nine men and nine and a half women. The women's dives completed their final season in 2017, and Clemson announced on March 14, 2017 that it would add to the college softball, targeting early 2020 for the program.

Football

The Tiger football program has won 59.1% of its games through the 2010 season, placing it 34th on the winning percentage of all-time list. Clemson also won two Southern Conference degrees before joining the ACC. The program has participated in 33 bowl matches over the years, winning 16. The 1981 squad, led by Chief Coach Danny Ford, became the first athletic team in school history to win a national championship. Clemson defeated Nebraska 22-15 at the Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida to win the NCAA Football National Championship 1981. Game stars include Homer Jordan (QB) and Perry Tuttle (WR). Clemson finished 12-0 and was ranked # 1 in the Associated Press and Coaches poll.

Some of the most prominent training names in Clemson's football history are John Heisman (who also trains at Akron, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Penn, Washington & Jefferson, and Rice; Heisman Trophy named after him), Jess Neely, Frank Howard (who playing field in Death Valley is named), and Danny Ford. After Tommy Bowden resigned midseason on October 13, 2008, Dabo Swinney took over as temporary head coach. On December 1, 2008, Swinney was appointed head coach of the Clemson Tigers football team.

Before each home game, the team ends pre-match warming and progresses to the dressing room. With five minutes to go before the game, three buses leave the road behind West Endzone that brings Clemson football players. The bus stops at the front gate of The Hill, and the Tigers gather at the summit, where each player proceeds to rub "Howard's Rock," which is an imported stone from Death Valley, California which was presented to Frank Howard in 1967. While Tiger Rag is played and sound cannons, Tigers ran down the hill to the field in front of over 83,000 shouting fans. This tradition has been dubbed "the 25th most exciting moment in college football" by sports announcer Brent Musburger.

Clemson women's basketball team is currently being trained by head coach Audra Smith. Achievements include:

Baseball

In 2008, the Tiger baseball team has recorded a combined 30 regular season ACC and tournament championships (the most in the conference), 34 NCAA Tournament appearances, 16 NCAA Regional Titles, 4 NCAA Super Regional Titles, and 12 World Series College appearances. Much of the baseball's success came under Bill Wilhelm for 35 seasons as Clemson head coach. Monte Lee is Tiger's current head coach, after replacing Jack Leggett after the end of the 2015 season.

* - ACC recognized championships. The ACC tournament has decided the conference champion since 1973 (except for 1979 due to academic conflict)

Ã,§ - ACC does not recognize Division Championship in baseball. Division serves the purpose of simplifying scheduling conferences during the regular season. Winning percentages in regular season game conferences is then used to determine the nursery for the Conference Tournament.

Men's Football

The men's soccer team is Clemson's second sports program to win a national championship, winning the NCAA Tournament in 1984 and again in 1987. In their 26th appearance at the NCAA tournament, the men's soccer team collects finished runners-up in 1979 and 2015, and has appeared in the NCAA Final Four eight times, with the 2015 squad being the most recent team to achieve that feat. In addition to their NCAA degree, the men's program has won 16 regular-season combined ACC and tournament titles, with the latter coming at the 2014 ACC Tournament. The Tigers only know four coaches in their history: IM Ibrahim (1967-1994, 388-100-31 career record), Trevor Adair (1995-2008, 50-48-10 record at Clemson), Phil Hindson (Interim) coach in 2009, a record of 6-12-1) and Mike Noonan. Former famous tigers include Oguchi Onyewu, Stuart Holden and Paul Stalteri, a third restricted to their respective country.

* - ACC recognized championships. The ACC champion was decided by the tournament since 1987

Female Women's Football

Women's football became a university sport at Clemson in 1994. The women's soccer team has won the regular season ACC crown twice, and advanced to the NCAA tournament sixteen times. The team can never advance past the quarter-finals of the NCAA tournament. However, the team has been able to reach the Final Quarter four times. The Tigers have known five coaches in their history Tracey Leone (1994-1998 89-39-4 career record), Ray Leone (1999-2000 33-10-3 career record), Todd Bramble (2001-2007 80-51-17 career record), Hershey Strosberg (2008-2010 14-39-1 career record), and Eddie Radwanski (2011-Present).

Golf

The Tiger golf team has a tradition of being the best in ACC and country, having won several ACC degrees and regularly qualifying for the NCAA Tournament. In 2003, Clemson beat Oklahoma State to win the first National Championship in golf and the fourth overall for the school. In addition to that victory, Clemson also won the Eastern Region ACC and NCAA title that year, making the Tigers the first program in NCAA history to win the conference, regional and national championships of the same year. Clemson has also won seven regional titles since the NCAA adopted a regional tournament format in 1989. US Open champion 2009 Lucas Glover is playing golf at Clemson.

Other sports universities

In 2017, Logan Morris represented US at the IAAF World Championships in Uganda, completing 45 runners in Junior 101 (below 20 levels).

Jay Berger was twice All American in tennis for Clemson, and went on to a pro career where the world's highest ranking was # 7.

* ACC Championships decided by the tournament until 2004; the regular season finish has been decisive champion ACC since the 2005 season.

* Lady oar rowing team became the first team other than Virginia to win the ACC Championship since ACC started sponsoring the women's rowing championship in 2000.

Stopped university sports

* Clemson sponsors women's dive team from 2013-2017.

Wrestling

Wrestling at Clemson University was suspended in 1995, despite the success of the program, due to a financial shortage of Tiger Athletics funding from the university. The wrestling program started in 1975 winning the ACC title as a team under coach Eddie Griffin in 1991. The Tiger wrestling program produced 8 wrestlers overall with All-American status, two NCAA Champions, and finish at the NCAA Championships as high as 7 in 1994. Sammie Henson is a prominent former at Clemson, as one of the most successful tiger wrestlers with the 1993 and 1994 NCAA Champion titles that eventually won the 2000 Olympic silver medal and became the 1998 world champion in freestyle wrestling.

Rugby

Clemson Rugby was founded in 1967. Although rugby is a sports club in Clemson, the team received significant support from the university and from the Clemson Rugby Foundation, founded in 2007 by Clemson alumni. Clemson rugby has been led since 2010 by head coach Justin Hickey, who also serves as team manager for the US Under-20 national team.

Clemson's best season was 1996, when the team advanced to the rugby quarterfinals of national colleges. Clemson also advanced to the round of 16 of the national playoffs for three consecutive years from 2005-2007. Clemson has been playing since 2011 in the Atlantic Coast Rugby League against traditional rivals ACC. Clemson was second in the conference in spring 2012 with a 6-1 conference record, barely losing Maryland to a conference title and a place in the national college playoff rugby. Clemson again completed the spring of 2013 with a 6-1 conference record, and then beat South Carolina 29-7 in the round of 16 national playoffs, before losing in the quarterfinals to Central Florida 20-24.

Other Competition

Clemson's inter-conference football competition includes Georgia Tech (GT leads 50-29-2), NC State (Clemson leads 56-28-1 at the Textile Bowl), Boston College (O'Rourke-McFadden Trophy, Clemson leads 15-9 - 2), and Florida State (FSU leads 20-11).

Clemson has a lower competition with the University of Georgia, born because of the proximity of the two institutions (about 75 miles apart). Clemson and Georgia first met in 1897, only the second year Tigers downgraded the football team. The competition reached its peak in the 1980s. The athletic department has recently added games to be played in 2013 at Clemson and 2014 in Athens. Georgia leads the 41-18-4 football series, winning the last five consecutive meetings to lose to the Tigers in 2013.

Song counter

Clemson's battle song is "Tiger Rag", "Song Shakes the Southland", a variation of a song originally recorded by Original Dixieland Jazz Band. The song is played at all Clemson sports events, especially following a great score or drama, and during the "25 Most Exciting Fun at College Soccer". The song lyrics were not used, except for the "Clemson" spell at the end.

With the completion of WestZone's first phase, the listed capacity for the Memorial Stadium is 80,301. WestZone holds many IPTAY offices, Clemson football coaching offices, heavy lift rooms, locker rooms, and hiring centers.

The men's and women's basketball teams play at Littlejohn Coliseum, which has a registered capacity of 10,000 spectators. Littlejohn also acts as a venue for campus functions throughout the year, including concerts and graduation ceremonies.

The newly renovated Doug Kingsmore stadium is home to Clemson's men's baseball team.
