Plot

In Boston in the early 1960s, Geraldine Cummins was walking home alone from the cinema when she was jumped and raped by a black man. Stunned, she returns to her husband's home, Bob, stating that she has been raped. Sometime later, she finds her pregnant. She keeps the baby for several reasons: she is a Catholic and she keeps a little hope that it can be her baby's baby. Because the baby is a black woman, she is afraid of the social isolation she will receive and what people think about her. He was heartbroken, but decided to give up his daughter. She named her newborn daughter, Barbara Anne Cummins, and gave her to foster the mother of Corrine Burrel, a black woman in Roxbury.

Seven years later, Barbara is a happy little girl. A few months later, a social worker came to their house and told Corrine that Barbara would be adopted by Annalise and Paul, a white man living in Wisconsin. Corrine seeks legal action, looking to adopt Barbara for herself, but because she is divorced without a job and many children, she is rejected.

Annalize became worried about Barbara's very separate nature and suggested to Paul that they move to a suburban neighborhood where Barbara could be around other black kids. Paul is upset that they have to change everything for a child he does not want, but agrees, only to leave them after moving. Barbara once again became herself after the neighboring children made fun of her for being black with a white mother. For years until she was 16, she was alone without her mother or friends. At 16 he meets Don, a football player who plays the choir. He fell in love with her and eventually got pregnant.

Years later, in the middle of Barbara's third pregnancy, the doctor advised her to see her family history for medical reasons. This made her search for her mother. He visits Corrine and then contacts the agent responsible for his adoption. By reading the records of adoption, he knows the truth about his birth and his birth mother. After the night of contemplation, he decides to seek his birth mother.

Revitalized by the joy of knowing he was wanted by his biological mother and adoptive mother, Barbara made peace with Annalize. Anxiously, Gerry and his three grown children waited at the airport for Barbara's arrival. Finally, after 34 years, the mother and daughter met. Barbara is furious why Gerry handed her over if he loved her, asking if it would make a difference if she was born white. Gerry says he only wants the best for Barbara, to be with those who can teach her courage, which she can not, because Gerry feels ashamed of being raped and has a black daughter, even though she loves him. Gerry apologizes to Barbara and both are reconciled as mothers and daughters. Later, at a family reunion, Corrine, Gerry and Annalize meet again for the first time. The film ends with a picture of all the family sides of Barbara, her mother, her uncles, her brother and sister, her children, and her nephew and niece, and Barbara no longer feels alone.
