Initiative 96 of 2004 is a voting initiative that changed the Montana Constitution to prevent same-sex marriage from being committed or acknowledged in Montana. The initiative was passed through a public referendum on 2 November 2004 with 67% voting support and 33% opposed.
The text of the amendment adopted, found in Article XIII, section 7 of the Montana Constitution, states:
Only marriage between one man and a woman is legitimate or recognized as a marriage in this country.
