Ringkasan plot
The picture of Hollis Woods is the story of an 11-year-old orphan girl (Hollis Woods) who has moved into countless host families during her lifetime. She was initially abandoned at birth by her mother in a local park, with a piece of paper instructing that she be named Hollis Woods after the park. His current home is a good old artist named Josie, who treats Hollis with love but begins to lose his memory and independence. Hollis quickly realized that despite Josie's good intentions, she could not take care of Hollis as a guardian, forgot to take Hollis to school and buy groceries. Concerns Hollis returns to the home of a former foster mother who he calls "stucco woman", where she is neglected and badly treated. He knew that if Josie's forgetfulness was found, his social worker would send Hollis to another orphanage. When he is confronted by a social worker, who tries to investigate Josie's treatment, Hollis assures Josie that they must leave town.
Hollis's story is also punctuated by a flashback to his orphanage from behind, with a family called Regan. The father, called Hollis Old Man, and his mother, called Hollis Izzy, are very kind and friendly to Hollis, even though his stiff exterior is due to frequent relocations. Old Man and Izzy both care about Hollis, nurturing his love for drawing through gifts and praising his abilities. The Regans also has a son named Steven, whom Hollis became close friends during the summer where he lived with them in their summer home, Branches. The branches are in the mountains, and have lakes and forests where Hollis and Steven explore. Hollis insists that he is determined to someday climb their nearest mountain, which Steven negates, saying it is too high and dangerous because of the frequent mud.
After this very happy summer, Regan asked Hollis if they could adopt him. Hollis overwhelmed and agreed, feeling loved and accepted in the family for the first time in his life. He quietly leaves the house the next day to climb the mountain, the last celebration movement before he becomes part of the family. However, his journey took longer than he expected, and he finally mounted the mountain in darkness, fell and hurt himself. Fortunately, Steven remembers his plans to climb mountains and drive a family truck to find him. They started down the mountain in the truck, but the darkness and slippery roads caused Steven to lose control and crash, injuring himself. Hollis's panic, and then it was revealed that although Steven was fine, he refused to join the Regan family, believed he was responsible for his injuries and that he was not a member of Regan. The Regans, though sad, accepted his decision, causing him to be expelled from their home and transferred to Josie.
Hollis decides that he will take Josie to the Branch to hide from his social worker, knowing that Regan will be at their winter home for almost Christmas. She struggles to take care of herself and Josie in the cabin, where there is little food and bad heating. Josie gets more confused, forgetting why they left town in the first place and told Hollis that she missed Beatrice, a cousin close to her. Hollis tries fishing in the woods to provide food, but sees the distant figure he considers a fisherman. Fearing the discovery, he runs away. Josie and Hollis celebrate Christmas together in the Branch, giving each other a little gift. Hollis finally realizes that Josie can no longer care for Hollis or herself, and calls Beatrice, asking her to bring her inside. Beatrice agrees, and Hollis resigns to return to take care of the new family. However, he meets Steven, who has come to the cabin feeling that he will be there. He reveals that he is a fisherman in the jungle, and has filled food and gas at home to make sure Hollis and Josie can survive there. He asks Hollis to return to Regan to be part of their family, and he agrees.
The short epilogue shows Hollis as a member of the Regan family, has been legally adopted and changed his name. She now lives happily with Steven, Old Man, Izzy, and her new baby sister, Christina. He eventually experiences peace and acceptance, being part of a family that, though unconventional, is his. Forest Hollis thinks that he is a "mountain of trouble."

Critical reception
Critics praise Giff's work in this book.
According to the School Library Journal , "Giff admits these two strands together in a surprising and satisfying end. A strong characterization and a strong sense of place are the power of this heart-touching story that will appeal for fans of Sharon Creech Ruby Holler (2002), Katherine Paterson The Great Gilly Hopkins (1978, both Harper Collins), and Zilpha Keatley Snyder < i> (Delacorte, 1998) ".
Kirkus's comment states that Giff "professionally describes the intense and sincere emotions that Hollis experienced and gives his talents and courage; he is totally depressing, despite his constructive childhood." The secondary character is also totally drawn and favored without being too good. This touching story will make the reader feel calm, satisfied with a happy ending, and be excited for more about the future of Hollis.
The Weekly Publishers also stated that "Giff was smacking gorgeous scenes showing the love that grew from Hollis to Josie with the memories of the Regan, whose pictures were kept by Hollis in his sketchbook."
The Horn Book Magazine has reviewed this book as "a highly observable novel, weaving gracefully back and forth in time and filled with humor derived primarily from Hollis's honesty and loudness." The trail of Hollis's relationship with Josie and his foster brother, Steven Regan, is very well described. "
Book List has also positively described the novel by stating that "Veteran writer Giff has a definite hand with language, and his narrative is tense and absorbing".
