All Supervisors are also members of the Board and meet regularly to discuss charitable activities and progress. Chairman of the Board is Lieutenant General Sir Gary Coward KBE CB.

History

James Gildea founded the Soldier and Sailor Family Association in 1885. In 1919, after the formation of the Royal Air Force (in 1918), the organization expanded its support to become Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Family Association (SSAFA). In 1997, SSAFA Force Assistance was established when two charities, "Community Support Force" and "SSAFA", joined. On April 10, 2013, the name changed to SSAFA as part of a rebranding which aims to raise awareness of organizational work among members of the armed forces community.
