History

In 1954 Harry (1904-1964) and Bertha Holt (1904-2000) were busy raising their six children on a farm near the small town of Willamette Valley in Creswell. In addition to farming, Harry runs a timber company. Bertha, trained as a nurse, is a housewife and mother.

After seeing the documentary about "G.I. baby" from the Korean War at an orphanage in Korea, Holts decided they would adopt some children who needed a family. Harry began preparations for going to Korea, and Bertha asked a friend how to adopt eight children from another country. Learning that it is possible only if the two congressional assemblies passed a law allowing it, Bertha said, "Then that's what we'll do."

Two months later, "Holt Bill" was passed, and in October 1955, Harry and eight children arrived at Portland International Airport. The generated publicity drives interest among many families in the United States. The Holts began helping others to adopt, and what started as a small operation run from Bertha's kitchen table in Creswell (and Harry's hip bag in Korea) soon became a major movement.
