Storylines

Janet was born in September 2006, the wedding day of Billy and Honey. Billy and Honey had agreed to name Janet's baby, after Honey's mother and Billy's mother. Janet was diagnosed with Down syndrome soon after her birth. Honey had a hard time understanding Janet's condition, and when it emerged that Janet needed heart surgery, Honey said it would be better for everyone if Janet died. Unfortunately later refused to let her daughter be named Janet, because she did not imagine her daughter's future like that. Billy had begun to call him "Petals" as a term of affection, thus indicating that they were naming him.

Janet (now called Petal) is taken home from the hospital, and Madu finds it difficult to overcome it, wants to be adopted. She thought of choking Janet with a pillow, but could not do it. Honey fled to his father's canal boat, Jack Edwards' (Nicky Henson) in Kent. Billy tracked him down and took Janet with him. He puts her on the canal, saying that ordinary people leave babies with Down syndrome outside the night, and if the baby survives, they'll keep it. Honey is shocked by Billy's actions and he picks her up and they go home. Despite Billy's bravery and love for her, Honey's fear of raising Janet wins, and Billy and Honey put him up for adoption, giving it to foster families, Kim (Lorraine Arnold) and Tony Smith (Enzo Squillino Jr.), just before Christmas. However, when Janet is taken to the hospital for major surgery, Billy goes to see him, and when Honey reads Billy's letter to a woman named Petal, she follows, walking on her Christening. The doctors said he would be okay after the surgery. In September 2008, Janet moved with Honey and her brother, William Mitchell (Toby Warpole), after Billy's relationship with Honey was unsuccessful. However, they still go to visit Billy.

In May 2010, Billy was forced to keep Janet and William, after Honey and Jack were involved in a car accident. She struggles to tell them that Jack has died, and that Honey is in critical condition. That night, Billy finds Janet playing with the drugs he tried to sell before he knew about the accident, and with that, he sent him to Phil Mitchell's (Steve McFadden). In July 2011, Janet and William meet Billy's grandson, Lola Pearce (Danielle Harold). In July 2012, Janet and William later appear when Billy brings the Olympic torch for the London 2012 Olympics in a special soapy live segment. Janet returns in February 2014, with William. He returns again on May 27, 2014, when Honey visits Walford to tell Billy that he moved to Canada with Janet and William. Billy crumbles and burns Janet's passport to try and stop them going. Honey remains determined, but decides to leave Janet with Billy, when he realizes how well he does it. Janet bid farewell to Honey and William, before officially moving with Billy, Lola and Lola's daughter Lexi Pearce (Dotti-Beau Cotterill), until Lola and Lexi leave in July 2015.

In November 2015, Honey and Will (now Freddie Phillips) returned from Canada and Billy and Honey decided to give their relationship again. In October 2016, Billy, Honey, Will and Janet moved into flats above the cemetery, where Billy was a partner in the business. When Janet was hit by a car and hospitalized in October 2017, Billy hurt Honey when she accused her of treating Janet differently than Will. Janet initially could not feel her legs but made a full recovery. Billy wants to get Janet a dog, so Karen Taylor (Lorraine Stanley) agrees that Billy can bring his dog Bronson for a few nights for Janet.

Reception

The storyline involving the birth of Janet Mitchell has been criticized by the Royal College of Midwives, which claims the storyline is inaccurate and unrealistic. They claim that Honey should not have been denied an epidural and should not be informed of her daughter's condition without her husband's presence. Furthermore, Honey and her baby are being treated by a character who is repeatedly referred to as a "Cheryl nurse", when in fact, a midwife will be present, and will check it continuously rather than leave her own mother. worry and then disappear unnoticed. They also claimed that the baby looked stiff when in fact he had to be floppy, and nobody opened the baby blanket to inspect it.

The BBC says much of the research is done such as talking to families with children who have Down syndrome, and dealing with senior midwives as well as Down's Syndrome Association. The BBC said Honey did not reject the epidural but actually locked herself in the bathroom. They also can not exclude a baby with Down syndrome for the first few episodes, which is why the baby looks stiff. The Down's Syndrome Association says that the way Billy and Honey know about their baby's condition and their continued support is not a best practice model, but it is still a realistic situation. Conversely, the repayment of learning disabilities Mencap praises soap, saying it will help raise awareness.

Grace received a nomination at The British Soap Awards 2016 in the category of "Best Young Performance".
