Plot

In 1986, Saroo, a five-year-old boy, lives with his older brother Guddu, his mother and sister in Khandwa, India. Guddu and Saroo stole coal from freight trains to trade milk and food. One day, Saroo followed his brother to work and they arrived at the nearest train station, where Saroo decided to stay back and take a nap. Guddu tries to wake her up, but Saroo is too tired. When Guddu does not return, Saroo searches for him and board the train which allegedly Guddu is on the ship. He fell asleep again in one of the compartments, and got up to find the train moving. After a few days, he arrived in distant Calcutta, where he did not understand the local Bengali language. He stood at the ticket counter and tried to get the return ticket, but the officer did not recognize the name of his village, which Saroo said was "Ginestalay". He spent the night at the station with some street children, but then woke up and was forced to run when a group of people tried to kidnap them.

Saroo continues to roam around town before finding Noor, a seemingly friendly woman who takes her back to his apartment. He tells Saroo that a man named Rama will help him find his way home. Saroo runs away, sensing that Noor and Rama have evil intentions, and flees Noor when he chases her. After two months living near Howrah Bridge, Saroo was taken to the police by a young man. Unable to track down his family, they put him in an orphanage. Three months later, Saroo was introduced to Ny. Sood, who told him that he had advertised about him in some local newspapers, but no one answered. He then tells him that an Australian couple is interested in adopting him. He started teaching English Saroo and he moved to Hobart, Tasmania in 1987, under the care of Sue and John Brierley, where he slowly began to settle down. A year later, they adopted another boy, Mantosh, who had difficulty adjusting to a new home and suffering anger and self-harm.

Twenty years later, Saroo, now a young man, moved to Melbourne to study hotel management. She started a relationship with Lucy, an American student. While dining with some Indian friends in their home, he finds a jalebi, a delicious meal he remembers from his childhood. She confessed that she was adopted, and her friends suggested she use Google Earth to search her hometown in India. Saroo begins his quest, but over time disconnects from Lucy, overwhelmed by the emotional thoughts his family has to pass through when he's lost.

Saroo visits Sue, whose health is deteriorating, and knows that she is infertile, but has chosen to help others in need through adoption, believing that there are already too many people on Earth. Saroo spent a long time looking for nothing for his hometown. One night, while he was scanning Google Earth, he saw the rock formations where his mother worked, and then found his residence: the Ganesh Talai neighborhood in Khandwa district. She finally tells her adoptive mother about her search, and she fully supports her efforts.

Saroo returns to his hometown, and with the help of a local English speaker, has an emotional reunion with his biological mother and sister. He also learns that Guddu is dead, killed by trains on the same night when they are separated at the station as children. Saroo's mother never despairs and believes that one day her lost son will return, and never moved from the village. The film ends with a description of the actual return of Saroo to India in February 2012. A real Australian family photo is shown, as well as Saroo footage introducing Sue to her biological mother in India, who deeply respects Sue's concern for her son. Saroo later learned that he had mispronounced his own name, which is actually a Sheru, which means "lion".

"Noting that she was crying" unstoppably "while watching a movie, Rushdie said she was" often suspicious of Western films organized in contemporary India, and so one of the things that impressed me most about Lion was genuineness and truth and realism that did not his duties The first half of India Every moment in the journey the little boy rings true - not instantaneous exoticism - and as a result his grief touches all of us, cinematography Greig Fraser portrays the beauty of the country, both honestly and beautifully [...] Dev Patel and Nicole Kidman, in the second half of the Australian film, gave a remarkable show as well. "

Some critics say that parts of the film move slowly. For example, Anthony Lane of The New Yorker wrote: "... based on a true story, though heartbreaking, there is hardly enough to fill the dramatic space, and the second half is slow and silences the affair after the first Dickensian punch. "
