Plot
Ted Brooks is a dentist in Miami, Florida. Each city bus carries an advertisement for dentist's practice with his photo. One day, Ted received a letter from Alaska, calling him the sole heir of one of Lucy Watkins, a Tolketna inland village resident. Brooks's mother, Amelia, reveals that she was adopted; Lucy is her birth mother.
Ted traveled to Tolketna to claim his legacy from Lucy: seven Siberian Huskies and a Border Collie named Nana. In Tolketna, he found his roots. Truly out of his element, Ted encounters challenges he never dreamed of: snow storms, thin ice, foxes, skunks, bears, an intimidating and crustling old man named James "Thunder Jack" Johnson, and an aggressive dog leader and challenging, Satan. All this happens with the buzzing excitement of the Arctic Challenge Sled Dog Race, which is just two weeks away.
Ted tries to find out why he's giving up for adoption, and who his biological father is. She meets Barb bar owner, a close friend of Lucy. Barb helps Ted to deal with the dog and teaches him how to ride a sled, and falls in love with him. Ted has several meetings with Thunder Jack, who are trying to buy dogs, especially Satan. Barb tells Brooks that Thunder Jack is his real father. Ted confronts Thunder Jack, who offers to tell the truth about Ted's birth in exchange for a dog; Ted agreed. Jack takes Brooks to a cave in the woods. During the Arctic Challenge, she and Lucy are stranded in the cave, and that's where Ted was conceived. The next morning, when Thunder Jack wakes up, Lucy's gone. He looked for it but never found it. Ted goes back to Miami.
Thunder Jack adds the Devil as his team leader's dog to the Arctic Challenge. Ernie has finished last in the last three Challenges, "winning" the "Arctic Flame" award as the last "musher" to cross the finish line. The others flooded all the camps at checkpoints to await a bad storm, but Jack kept pressing. He is distracted by the pretensions of defending champion Olivier, who eats at the crab legs in an intricate tent.
In Miami, Ted recounts his experiences to his mother, who inadvertently damaged the frame that holds the images of Lucy and Satan. This reveals Lucy and Jack snapshots with babies. Ted is angry that Jack is lying to him, and rushes back to Alaska. There he found out that Jack was lost on the road, and the weather was too bad for search. Ted decides to go find himself, bringing Lucy's dogs with Nana as leader. As he returned along the path, he almost collided with Olivier, who won the Challenge again. A few hours later, Amelia arrives and meets Barb. He knows that Ted is out on the street, looking for Jack. The "Arctic Flame" burns at the finish line, until the last musher arrives.
Ted finally puts Thunder Jack in the old cave. Jack admits that he and Lucy had been together when Ted was born, and that he loved her. But she and Lucy have agreed that no one can raise a baby. Ted also finds that the Demon is grumpy because he has bad teeth. He pulls his teeth and Demon becomes friendly (though keeping his name). During the trip back to Tolketna, the sled almost over the cliff into the river, but the dogs pulled back up. Ted finally brought Thunder Jack over the finish line. Ted introduced Thunder Jack to Amelia, and Brooks and Thunder Jack decided to share the "Arctic Flame" trophy.
Some time later, Ted has transferred dental practice to Tolketna. She and Barb become couples and married, while she has become a receptionist and pregnant, and Nana and Satan have four puppies named Avalanche, Little Aleutia, Chinook, and Demon Jr.. Back in Miami, cousin Ted Rupert (SisqÃÆ'ó), also a dentist, is a new dentist celebrity, with his face on every city bus.
