Histori

The Angora Goats have been regarded by some as direct descendants of the Central Asia marker ( Capra falconeri ). They have been in the region since about Paleolithic. Angora goats are described in reverse from the Turkish 50 lira banknote of 1938-1952.

Introduction to Europe

The first Angora goats were brought to Europe by Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor, circa 1554, but, like later imports, were not very successful.

Introduction to Australia

The Angora Goats were first imported into Australia in 1832 and 1833. They came from M Polonceau stud in France to Riley's family property, Raby, New South Wales. Pure bred Angoras were imported from the Ottoman Empire in the years to 1873, to properties in New South Wales, Victoria, and then South Australia. Other countries followed and there were imports from South Africa in 1873 and from the United States between 1890 and 1910.

The Angora Goats were introduced to New Zealand in about 1867 by the acclimatization community of Auckland, Canterbury and Otago in an effort to raise animals with more precious skin. Angora goats initially struggled to gain a foothold but were unsuccessfully tested for weed control purposes at Maungaturoto in 1904 and, after the escape, a wild population established in Waipu while a government herd was set up in Helena Bay. In the 1970s, the number of Wild Waipu Angora was captured and used as a base animal for Government initiatives aimed at expanding the NZ agricultural base. This angoras was originally enhanced by Australian genetics. In the mid-1980s imports from South Africa and Texas genetics (via Australia) were used to further increase Angora New Zealand.

Introduction to South Africa

In 1838, Sultan Mahmud II of the Ottoman Empire sent twelve rams and one female to Port Elizabeth in South Africa. The rats were infertile because the Sultan wanted to protect his powerful mohair empire. However, the female on board was pregnant and gave birth to a ram on the way to Africa, which was the beginning of the industry in South Africa. The Karoo region currently produces the most mohair in the world.

Introduction to North America

Angora goat was first introduced in the United States in 1849 by Dr. James P. Davis. Seven adult goats are a gift from Sultan AbdÃÆ'¼lmecid I in recognition of his services and advice on lifting cotton. More goats were imported from time to time, until the Civil War destroyed most of the large groups in the south. Finally, Angora goats began to flourish in the southwest, particularly in Texas, wherever grasses and shrubs were enough to support them. Texas to this day remains the largest mohair producer in the US, and the third largest in the world.

Characteristics

The wool of sheep taken from an Angora goat is called mohair. A goat produces about four to five kilograms of hair per year. Angora is shaved twice a year. Angoras, despite their coats, are not directly related to sheep.

Turkey, Argentina, USA, and South Africa are the main producers of mohair. Secondary producers include New Zealand and Australia. For a long time, Angora goats were bred for their white coats. In 1998, the Color Angora Goat Breeders Association was formed to promote the breeding of colored Angoras. Now, Angora goats produce white, black (black to ash and silver), red (colors fade significantly as goats grow older), and brownish fibers.

Angora goats are more susceptible to external parasites (ectoparasites) than similar animals, because their coats are denser. They are not productive breeders, nor are they considered to be very strong, becoming very subtle during the first few days of life. Furthermore, Angoras have high nutritional needs due to their rapid hair growth. A poor quality diet will reduce the development of mohair.
