Breed history

The word "Boerboel" comes from "boer," says Afrikaans/Dutch for "farmers." Boel is an old slang Dutch/Afrikaans word for dogs. Therefore, Boerboel is translated as "peasant dog" or "Boer dog" and should be pronounced like "boo-r-bull." (not Burbull). Boerboel is the only South African race dog created to defend the homestead.

Despite the long history of Boerboel's breeding, there is considerable uncertainty about how many and which breeds are used to make it. It is generally believed that this breed was made from interbreeding with native African dogs, such as Africa, with breeds brought to South Africa by Dutch, French and British settlers.

The origins most likely came from Jan van Riebeeck's arrival to the Cape in 1652. Van Riebeeck took "Bullenbijter" with him. The original settlers, and later the European settlers, also had large and powerful dogs that were almost certainly raised with a native South African breed of local dog.

In the early 1860s, when military posts were scattered across the South African border, sniffer dogs, staghounds, bulldogs, bulldogs, terriers, mastiffs, pointers, and sometimes foxhounds could be found in every post. The Boer Dog is a cross between these breeds. It's generally around the military post where the best Boer dogs can be found. In addition, the best dogs to hunt leopards and baboons is a cross between mastiff and bulldog.

Then, in 1928, the De Beers diamond mining company imported Bullmastiff to South Africa to safeguard mines. This breed is also crossed with Boerboels in the area.

Boerboels today

Boerboel was first introduced to pure race fans around the world, including the United States, by American anthropologist Dr. Carl Semencic, first in an article in Dog World Magazine and later in his book entitled Gladiator Dogs first published by TFH Publications in 1998 and later republished by other publishers in 2013. Semencic praised the early intimacy with breeding for his own trip to South Africa, but especially for frequent correspondence with the head of South Africa's first Boerboel club, one Mr. Rust Kobus. Later, the Boerboel Breeders Association was founded in 1983 in the Senecal district of the Free State with the sole purpose of honoring and promoting Boerboel as a unique type of South African dog.

Currently, Boerboel breeding is a hobby and industry in South Africa. These dogs are now exported from South Africa to other parts of the world.

Boerboel's protective character is clear and much sought after, like calm, stable, and confident of this breed. The dogs are obedient and intelligent and have strong territorial instincts. Boerboel remains a breed of choice among today's farmers and is very popular for the same reasons in urban society.

The Boerboel name is commonly misspelled as boom boom , boerbull , and borbull .

Boerboel is a very strong dog type. Because of its use as an agricultural dog that brought it into conflict with a large African predator like a lion, Boerboel was artificially chosen for the ability to protect themselves and others.

There are also standard differences. The South African Kennel Union does not accept black coats but SABT does, so buyers have to decide what standards to follow, as if dogs have black coats or breeds of dogs with black coats they can not be listed on AKC, KUSA, BI or Ebbasa.

Description

Appearance

Boerboel is a large dog, with strong bone structure and well-developed muscles. The head appears yellow, but not excessively, with a short length between the stop and the nose. It should look impressive, carrying itself with confidence and strong movements, which should be light, and unencumbered, regardless of size. It should be symmetrical and balanced, following the desired proportions to multiply. Men must be much larger than women, there are different sexual dimorphisms, with women who are less prominent physically.

Symbol

Boerboel is a shedder below average and easy to maintain. The occasional brushing and monthly bath and nail spikes are all that is needed. This breed has an outer layer that is usually rough and straight, and a soft and dense undercoat.

The coat is short, dense, smooth, soft, and shiny. Color coat can be various shades of red, brown, dappled, black or yellowish brown. Many dogs have black masks around their mouth that sometimes extends to their eyes and ears.

Temperament

Boerboels are a smart and energetic type. They are loyal, great with children, and tend to protect their families and territories.

They are quite charming when not lazy, and will not hesitate to defend their loved ones to death.

They are often called "Velcro" dogs, always wanting to be with their owners, and hence, not vulnerable to wandering alone.

Boerboel also requires rigorous training and handling from an early age. It is not unusual for this breed to show aggression against other dogs or strangers.

Health

Boerboels are generally known for their good health. However, Boerboels can suffer from hip or elbow dysplasia, vaginal hyperplasia, ectropion, and entropion. Recently, juvenile epilepsy (with attacks caused by metabolic or stressful changes) has appeared in boerboel breeds. The behavior and behavior of a boerboel may change over time. The average life expectancy is ten years.

Temperament

Prospective owners must recognize that having Boerboel requires a significant commitment in time and energy because they need to be properly trained and socialized in order to become happy and well-adjusted family members.

These dogs thrive under positive strengthening training techniques and require human assistance and structure. If left isolated, Boerboels will deviate and can become destructive. Owners should be vigilant to try to control the dog by force because it is detrimental to their psychological health and can lead to potential behavioral reactions in the future. These dogs benefit from owners who value their size and strength but are not afraid of it.

Although more suitable for large yards, Boerboels can adapt but will struggle to live in small environments as long as they receive regular practice and a lot of attention. Regardless of the amount of space available, they should have plenty of physical and mental exercise. Boerboels can be done on a large yard and are safely protected, but at least this type of dog should be carried on a long walk every day. According to SABBS, it is the responsibility of the owner to keep the dog safe, properly controlled and monitored in public, or when around children or strangers. It is also important to note that boerboels are bred to handle large animals such as lions and baboons, so rigorous training should be included to avoid aggression.
