In some parts of Canada, Family Day (French: Jour de la famille Louis Riel Day , Nova Scotia Heritage Day and The Islands Day respectively -something. British Columbia (BC) observes Family Day on the second Monday of February. Two thirds of Canadians live in the province observing mandatory February holidays.
The second and third Mondays in February are regular working days in Quebec, Newfoundland and Labrador, and region. Since Family Day is not recognized in the federal sphere, federal employees in all provinces (such as civil servants and postal workers) are working today. At Yukon, one Friday in February is considered Yukon Heritage Day .

Alberta
The holiday was first celebrated in 1990. Alberta is the only province that has an official holiday in February until Saskatchewan began observing it in 2007.
The holiday was proclaimed by Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley, at the suggestion of the prime minister, Don Getty. Premier Getty said it was important for Albertans to spend time with their families, and that this holiday would emphasize the importance of family values.
Getty faced much criticism at the time; many employers who feel an additional holiday are an unnecessary financial burden. In response, Heritage Day is revealed to be a national holiday, which means employers will not be required to observe it. Under Alberta law, an employer may elect to observe Heritage Day as a public holiday, where the rules applicable for public holiday payments will be used.
Saskatchewan
In October 2006, Premier Saskatchewan, Lorne Calvert, proposed a holiday for the province, beginning in 2007. The Act for the Labor Standards Amendment Act, 2006, was introduced at the legislature on November 1, 2006, and received the Royal Assent on December 6 This action officially states Family Day on the third Monday of every February; The first Family Day in Saskatchewan is February 19, 2007.
The number of annual holidays remains unchanged for many, as Easter Monday is no longer considered a holiday by private companies. On January 10, 2011, while nominating for the leadership of the BC Liberal Party, Christy Clark proposed to hold a Family Day holiday on the third Monday of February. Clark later became prime minister; Speech from the Throne, submitted on October 3, 2011, said that BC will celebrate its first Family Day on February 18, 2013.
In 2012, a two-week consultation process was held to determine whether British colonists would prefer a holiday to fall on the second or third Monday in February. On May 28, 2012, it was announced that Family Day will be observed on the second Monday in February each year, starting February 11, 2013. Since this does not coincide with President's Day, it also provides two long, long weekends for tourism, especially in many BC ski resort.
On February 9, 2018, the British Columbia provincial government announced that Family Day would be transferred to the 3rd Monday in February 2019, to align their holiday with the rest of the provinces that observed it on Monday.
New Brunswick
On 5 September 2010, campaigning for re-election, New Brunswick Prime Minister Shawn Graham promised to set up a Family Day in his province if his Liberals Party was returned to government, Graham did not win re-election.
The Liberals won re-election in September 2014, and in February 2016, the Liberal Government began studying the execution of Family Day. On April 26, 2017, Premier Brian Gallant announced that New Brunswick will be the newest province to celebrate Family Day, starting on February 19, 2018.

Louis Riel Day (Manitoba)In February 2007, it was reported that the Manitoba government was considering a February vacation. The legislation proclaimed the third Monday in February when Louis Riel Day was adopted by the Legislative Council of Manitoba on 17 April 2007, and was first celebrated on February 18, 2008. Today is known as Louis Riel Day, a name advised by Manitoba school students, in honor of Louis Riel , the American leader who leads the struggle to defend the rights of indigenous people.
Islander Day
The provincial government of Prince Edward Island introduced Islander Day in 2009, due to the increasing trend of holidays in February. It was first held on the second Monday of February 2009, not the third Monday, as in other provinces. This oddity has generated much controversy, as businesses suffer from out of sync with their counterparts in other provinces, as well as the United States, which celebrate the President's Day on the third Monday of February. In April 2009, Provincial Prosecutor Gerard Greenan moved the holiday to a third Monday in February.
Nova Scotia Heritage Day
After the Nova Scotia Liberal Party was elected in 2013, its leader Stephen McNeil said he plans to make a February holiday in Nova Scotia. In December 2013 the government introduced a bill to make the holiday on the third Monday in February, beginning in 2015. The permanent name for the holidays, the Nova Scotia Heritage Day, was announced on June 26, 2014. Each year will respect different people, the first being the Viola Desmond. The first 12, covering 2015 - 2026, were selected by a panel appointed by three government members from suggestions from Nova Scotian schoolchildren. At Yukon, Yukon Heritage Day is a holiday observed on Fridays before the last Sunday of February. Although the government and many businesses are closed on this day, it is not an official holiday.
Elsewhere
Governments in the remaining jurisdiction without the February holidays have been under pressure to align. The Ontario Family Day validation means the Canadian financial sector, including the Toronto Stock Exchange, is mostly closed on this date. In 2008, federal NDP leader Jack Layton proposed that it be made as a federal holiday. Not a federal holiday, federally administered workplaces (such as post offices) work on Family Day regardless of the day's status in their respective provinces.
