Craigslist (styled as craigslist ) is an American classifieds site with sections devoted to jobs, housing, for sale, goods sought, service, community, shows, rÃÆ' © sumà ©  © s, and discussion forums.
Craig Newmark started service in 1995 as an email distribution list to friends, featuring local events in the San Francisco Bay Area. It became a web-based service in 1996 and extended to other confidential categories. It started growing into other US cities in 2000, and now covers 70 countries.
In March 2008, Spain, France, Italy, Germany, and Portugal became Craigslist's first non-English language. On August 9, 2012, more than 700 cities and areas in 70 countries have Craigslist sites. Some Craigslist sites cover a large area, not individual metropolitan areas - for example, the states of Delaware and Wyoming in the US, Colorado Western Slope, California Gold Country, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan are sites with their own Craigslist site.

After observing people who helped each other in a friendly, social, and trusting communal way on the Internet through WELL, MindVox and Usenet, and felt isolated as a relative newcomer to San Francisco, Craig Barrett founder Craig decided to create something similar for local events. In early 1995, he started an email distribution list to friends. Most of the initial postings are submitted by Newmark and are a notification about social events that appeal to software and Internet developers living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Immediately, word of mouth causes rapid growth. The number of subscribers and posts is growing rapidly. There is no moderation and Newmark is shocked when people start using mailing lists for non-event posts. People who try to get a full technical position find that the list is a good way to reach people with the skills they are looking for. This led to the addition of a category of work. User requests for more categories cause the list of categories to increase. Initial technology encountered some restrictions, so in June 1995 Majordomo was installed and the "Craigslist" mailing list returned to operation. Community members started asking for a web interface. Newmark listed "craigslist.org", and the website was aired in 1996.
In the fall of 1998, the name "List of Foundation" was introduced and Craigslist began to switch to the use of this name. In April 1999 , when Newmark learned from another organization called "List Foundation", the use of this name was canceled. Craigslist was listed as a nonprofit private company in 1999. Around this time, Newmark realized that his site was growing so fast that he could quit working as a software engineer and devote full attention to running Craigslist. In April 2000 , there are nine employees working in Newmark's San Francisco apartment.
In January 2000, the current CEO, Jim Buckmaster joined the company as programmer and CTO leader. Buckmaster contributes multi-city architecture of sites, search engines, discussion forums, tagging systems, self-posting process, homepage designs, personals categories, and the best Craigslist features. He was promoted to CEO in November 2000 .
This website grew to nine cities in the US in 2000, four in 2001 and 2002 respectively, and 14 in 2003. On August 1, 2004, Craigslist began charging $ 25 to post job vacancies on the New York page and Los Angeles. On the same day, a new section called "Gigs" was added, where cheap and unpaid work can be posted for free.

In December 2006, at UBS Global Media Conference in New York, Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster told Wall Street analysts that Craigslist had little interest in maximizing profits, and instead preferred to help users find cars, apartments, jobs and dates.
Craigslist's main revenue source is paid job advertising in certain American cities. The company does not formally disclose financial or proprietary information. Analysts and commentators have reported different figures for their annual earnings, ranging from $ 10 million in 2004, $ 20 million in 2005, and $ 25 million in 2006 up to possibly $ 150 million in 2007.

On June 19, 2015, eBay Inc. announced that it would release its shares back to Craigslist for an undisclosed amount, and settle litigation with the company. The move comes shortly before PayPal plans to make a payment, and attempts to release another unit to focus on its core business.
The Swedish luxury market website, Jameslist.com, received a lawsuit filed on July 11, 2012 in which one of the unspecified damages also requested complete closure of Jameslist.com. As a result, the young company was forced to change its name to James Edition.

In 2005, San Francisco Craigslist men looking for men were linked to facilitating sexual intercourse and were the second most common correlation to syphilis infection. The company has been pressured by officials of the San Francisco Public Health Department, encouraging Jim Buckmaster to state that the site has very small staff and that the community "should keep an eye on themselves". This site, however, adds links to the San Francisco City Clinic and STD forums.
On March 22, 2018, Craigslist discontinued the "Personality" section of the United States in response to the passage of the Sex Stop Termination Act (SESTA), which removed Section 230 ports that are safe for interactive services that are consciously involved in the illegal sex trade. Adult service controversy
Ads for "adult" (previously "erotic") services were initially privileged, then completely closed on September 4, 2010, following the claim controversy by state attorney general that advertising promotes prostitution.

Craigslist announced on September 15, 2011, that he has closed adult services in the United States, however, he defends his right to bring such advertising. Criticism
In July 2005, the San Francisco Chronicle criticized Craigslist for allowing advertisements from dog breeders, stating that this could encourage excessive sales of irresponsible pit bulls in the Bay Area.
