The Chicago Maternity Center Story is a 1976 long documentary film produced by Kartemquin Films. It tells the story of The Chicago Maternity Center as it struggles to stay open despite funding down. The center has been open for 75 years, but was forced to close due to changes in modern medical attitudes toward in-home births and lack of resources.
The film is organized into two parts. It first follows the story of Scharene Miller, who was one of the last moms to use birth services at the Maternity Home. The background of this personal story is given in the broader context of the emergence of corporate drugs and the current barriers to the poor in accessing quality medical care.
